TPO28 -Peary’s claim

Essay topics:

TPO28 -Peary’s claim

The lecture and the passage discuss the Robert E. peary claim. Although the passage claims that there are pieces of evidence that Peary had reached the north pole, the speaker refutes this idea through a number of reasons which will be described in this report.

First and foremost, the passage points out that the National Geographic Society's committes has declared that the Peary's claim is true. The speaker, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that on those time, the NAtional Geography's employees was close friends to Peary. Actually, this institution had funded plenty of money to Peary's adventure; therefore, the conclusion of this committee seems bias and is not trustworthy.

Furthermore, unlike the passage which states that Tom Avery can reach this place in thirty-seven days by dogsled so the claim of the Peary to reach the north pole in only thiry-seven days could be true, the speaker argues that the Tom's condition was different. He mentions that Tom had much less weight than Peary since he did not carry food with himself and he has sent them by ship. Also the weather at time of the Peary's claim was so unfavorable; then he could not use dogsled to reach the north pole.

Finally, although the passage says that by measuring the shadows of the Peary's photographs, scientists could adapt the shadows of this pictures with the real shadows of the those time, the professor disagrees by mentionng that this technique in not precise and can not measure the exact position of the shadow from hundred years ago. In addition, this pictures are lokk blurred and fuzzy and the shadow are faded; then, the result of this technique cannot be accurate.
