tpo33Carved stone balls
In the passage, the author states three theories of the purpose and meaning of the carved stone balls. Similarly, in the lecture, the professor thinks that it is convincing to believe these three theories.
First, in the passage, the author holds the view that carved stone balls were weapons used in hunting and fighting. And in the lecture, the professor provides the evident that they have hand access and sign of weapon use. So, the professor thinks that the balls could be used as weapons though the surface of the ball is well preserved.
Besides, another theory the author mentions in the lecture is that the carved stone balls were used as part of a primitive system of weights and measures. In the lecture, the professor really illustrates the process of measuring used by these balls. The lecturer explains that the balls are different in size and made from different types of stone, so they have different density, and in this way, the balls can be used for a weighing system.
Lastly, in the passage, the author states that the carved stone balls served a social purpose as opposed to a practical or utilitarian one. And in the lecture, the professor provides evidence to claim that. The professor thinks that the ball is the social marker and she finds that some balls are ornamental but some are extremely simple. Besides, she also discovers that the balls are never found in tombs so that she guesses that the ball represents social status.
