Both reading and listening parts offer two opposing views on the efficacy of the turtle excluder device (TED). While the passage presents three drawbacks of this system, the lecturer discussed some clues to cast doubt on the accuracy of those drawbacks and call them in questions.
First of all, the text referred to the probability of capturing turtle, which is rare, and the usage of TED cast to lose of a certain percent of shrimp from the net which is not cost-effective. However, the professor casts doubt on the validity of this assertion. While the professor accepts rarely turtles are captured by shrimpers, the amount of shrimper in the sea is high which put turtles in danger. As she explains, yearly the thousands of shrimp-fishing boats are float in the sea, if annually each boat catches one turtle, the number of captured turtles will be more than a thousand. Therefore, this low probability cannot verify to not use the TED.
Secondly, the passage posits that there is an alternative option such as the limited duration of net underwater, which is more effective than the TED. On the contrary, the instructor refutes the accuracy of this alternative too. As she said, it is an arduous task to monitor the shrimpers netting duration, since most of the boats are far away from the coast and controlling system cannot keep the duration of those boats. On the other hand, the checking the TED is more convenient and easier, as the controller just check the boat possesses a TED before it goes in the sea. Consequently, this purposed method is not as effective as the TED.
Finally, Meanwhile the article, by referring to some huge turtles which are bigger than TED's hole, makes TED's efficacy shaky, the lecturer, on the other hand, rejects this claim too. As she claims the opening of TED is arrangeable and shrimpers can easily modify its size without altering its function. Thus, the shrimper can avoid capturing the big turtles by enlarging the TED opening.
