The reading asserts that turtle excluder device (TED) is not an efficient device for solving the problem of turtles which catch with the shrimp boats. The lecturer, however, finds the idea dubious and casts doubt on the reasons mentions by the reading passage.
The reading argues that catching the turtles by shrimp boats happens rarely. Besides, using TED can cost losing some shrimps through this turtle passages. On the contrary, the professor brings up the fact that there are thousands of shrimp boats on the seas. Therefore, they catch thousands of turtles accidentally during the year. Moreover, nowadays population of turtles are very small, so catching thousands of them every year can be a severe problem.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that there are some alternative methods for solving this problem. One of these methods is reducing the time that shrimp boats are allowed to keep their nets underwater. Thus, the chance of catching turtles would decrease. Conversely, the lecturer undermines the point that it is a good idea but just in theory. She argues that it is tough to monitor this process unless we record the boats when they go into sea until they come back which is not practical.
Finally, the reading mentions that method of TED is not a practical solution since there are some large turtles which cannot escape from TEDs. The professor dismisses this idea and says that these TEDs can be easily modified. So, they can produce larger TEDs and, as a consequence, the size of TEDs could not be a problem anymore.
