The reading and the lecture are both about the solutions to preventing birds flying through the glass of buildings and getting injured. The article provides businesses three solutions to the problem, while the lecturer refutes each of the author’s points for the following reasons.
To begin with, the article regards one-way glass as an effective measure since it can help birds understand the glass as a solid barrier and thus stop them flying through it. However, the lecturer questions that such solution is not ideal as the author considers. he further explains that one-way glass usually functions just as mirror where it reflects the sky and tress outdoors. therefore, birds will still recognize the glass as a free space and fly into it.
Second, the article mentions that colorful designs is encouraged as a way to assist birds to avoid the glass in their path. The specific point is challenged by the lecturer. he indicates that birds will perceive the designed glass as an opened-whole space and therefore try to fly through it. Although architects can narrow the size of windows to extreme small, the office inner space will decrease on the other hand.
Finally, the article states that a building can be equipped with electronic magnets to guide birds away from the building. The lecturer casts doubt on such solutions by noting that birds only use their ability to sense Earth’s magnets when traveling long distance. In contrast, they use eyes and intelligence to find their path during the short trips between cities. As a result, those artificial magnets will not be helpful to them as the author claims.
