The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is whether 200 -million-years-old fossil structures, which were discovered in the state of Arizona, had been bee nests or not. Considering this, the author mentions some arguments that rejects bees existed on earth 200 million years ago. The professor, on the other hand, unequivocally challenges whatever contended in the reading by citing three reasons.
First, both the professor and the author talk about fossil remains of bees. As claimed by the passage, the oldest bee fossil belonged to100 millions years ago. therefore, it is implausible that fossil structures had been bee nests. The lecture, nevertheless, contradicts the author's view and explains that as early as 200 years ago trees with special sticky material were not exist on earth so that bodies of bees could not persevere. also, finding no bee fossil is not enough reason for ruling out that bees lived on earth 200 million years ago.
Second of all, the passage goes on to mentions that flowers which bees feed on existed on earth about 125 million years ago. therefore, it might not bees lived on earth before that time because they didn't have any nutrients to eat. In contrast, the professor explains that bees were able to feed on non-flower plants such as pine trees, which existed 200 million years ago. also, the professor mentions that bees might have adapted to feed on flower plants later.
The last point discussed in the passage is that discovered structures lack some details of modern-day bee nests. However, the professor rejects this by declaring that modern-day bees use some waterproof material. Chemical evidence of fossil structures consists of the same materials which may be strong validation for existence bees 200 million years ago.
