Usage of Fluorides in dental industry

Essay topics:

Usage of Fluorides in dental industry

The reading and the lecture both are about the presence of fluorides in the dental products and their advantages and disadvantages. The author claims that fluoride is a very essential component in preventive dentistry and talks about usage of fluorides as supplements. The lecturer casts his doubt on the use of fluorides as supplements and also talks about its side effects.

First of all the author talks about the use of fluorides in dental health. He supports the fact by giving examples of the dental health of children who were exposed to fluorides in their early childhood to those who weren't. The children who were subjected to fluoridised waters had a higher ability of plague prevention and lesser cavities. The lecturer counters this argument by talking about survey results which concluded that exposure to fluorides were more hazardous than known. Additionally he states that the teeth decay rates of children from the above examples were the same. Thus proving that fluorides had little or no effect on teeth decay rate and dental health in general.

Secondly the author mentions it is advantageous to add supplements of fluorides in toothpaste or as drops in dental mouth wash because of it's preventive dentistry. The lecturer counters this by saying that supplements are added without the consent of the general public and adding those supplements are an experiment. Hence they can't be treated as guinea pigs. The lecturer also talks about its side effects and sums up saying that there should be public discussions on its addition to dental products.

Finally the lecturer concludes by saying that the hazardous side-effects of fluorides are far more than what the author has mentioned. The author blindly accepts that fluoride is effective in the dental health care and prevents many dental problems. However the lecturer mentions several counter points and provides ananlysis of usage of fluorides and also mentions that consent of the general public is needed.
