using ethanol as a fuel
The reading states that although ethanol fuel, which is made from plants can potentially be a source of fuel, it cannot replace gasoline and adds three reasons to support this idea. However, the professor finds this idea dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the author of the reading.
First, the author states that just gasoline, using ethanol cannot be considered environmentally friendly, as it causes global warming by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when burned. Conversely, the lecturer states that as we try to make ethanol from plants like corn, we need to plant more corn and while planting corn, the process can counteract global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide and removing it from the environment.
Furthermore, the reading argues that by using plants like corn as the source for making ethanol, we would eliminate a source food, which is getting used by animals. In contrast, the speaker underlies the fact that while making ethanol, we are not obliged to use every part of the plant. The part in plants, that we need is cellulose, which can be used from the leftover parts of plants, which was not eaten by the animals. As a consequence, if we use this strategy there would not be any shortage of this source of food for animals.
Finally, the author of the text claims that it is true that currently, the cost of using ethanol and gasoline are the same, but it is just because of the fact that the government' tax subsides and once they remove it, the price of using ethanol will be significantly higher than what it is right now. On the contrary, the lecturer dismisses this issue due to the fact that the cost of using ethanol can compete with the price of gasoline in the future, for if enough people become users of the ethanol as a source of fuel, there will be an increase in the production of the plant, from which the ethanol is made. such an increase in production will eventually end up in proposing ethanol in a lower price. Additionally, the professor states that if we increase the production of such plant by three times, the cost can decrease to forty percent of what it currently is.
