Ways to preserve the Torreya tree
The lecturer presents reasons to disbelief all the three solutions stated in the reading passage, regarding the preservation of the Torreya taxifolia. The article claims that this type of tree can be reestablished in it's original location, artificialy moved to another region with similar conditions or kept in research centers.
Opposing to the first possibility, the teacher argues that the weather in the northern part of Florida, where the Torreya used to be found in abundance, is passing through major changes that may affect the microclimate conditions favorable to the Torreya's growth. The increasingly dryer weather will not meet the tree's needs for a wet and cool location.
Like the first solution, the second suggestion presented in the passage is also considered to be unaceptable. The lecturer gives the example of another type of tree that was transported by humans to a favorable environment. Despite the easy adaptation of the mentioned tree to the new location, it's gowth exceeded the expectations and affected the native species that lived there, causing a natural disaster.
The third solution is also uneffective to the teacher, since the research facilities are able to preserve a limited number of trees and seeds, that will not carry the genetic diversity and the sufficient number for the Torreya to resist diseases that may appear.
To sum up, while the article does present some apparently good solutions in order to preserve the Toreya taxifolia, the lecture shows that none of them are expected to work effectively.
