We have observed a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades. It is a slow increase, and despite the alarmist attitudes of some, it is nothing to be worried about. By analyzing the data and looking into the matter clearly, we can find that this is a normal process that has happened before.
Even though we have documented a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn't the reason for the increase in the sea level. That ice is already in the water, so it displaces it already. Think of ice cubes in your glass of water, when they melt it doesn't make the water from the glass spill over. The same thing happens when the ice cap melts. Since the Ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into a liquid state, nothing drastic happens.
When it comes to the source for the increase in the sea level, we just don't know where it comes from. Many scientific agencies like NASA have stated that they simply don't know from where all this new water is coming. So it is still a great unknown
The sea level has been fluctuating ever since the continents have emerged from the primordial ocean. We have seen many changes through the eons, half of our current landmass was submerged at one point. The same will probably happen later, and it will be through a slow and gradual process. Enough time will pass for humanity to adjust
The article states that a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades is a slow and normal process and should not to be worried about and provides three reason of support. However, the professor explains that this rise in the sea level is due to the activities of humans and is the cause of serious concerns and refutes each of the authors reasons.
First, the reading claims that even though we have document a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn’t the reason for the increase in the sea level. The professor agrees with this claim. However, she explains that rise in the sea level is due to melting of the permafrost. Permafrost is the sea which is situated on the ground. So, melting this permafrost adds to more water in the sea. Thus, contributing to rise in the sea level.
Second, the article posits that reason for the increase in sea level is still not known and many scientific agencies like NASA have also claimed this as true. The professor refutes this point by saying that although NASA have stated that they don’t know where some of the water is coming from, it is pretty clear that majority of water is coming from the melting permafrost. This melting is caused by the human activities like using fossil fuels for production of energy has lead to more emission of greenhouse gases which is ultimately led to the increase in sea level.
Third, the reading says that sea level has been fluctuating ever since the continents have emerged from the primordial ocean and thus humans will have time to adjust the changes. The professor opposes this point by explaining that majority of population and economies are near the sea. Increase in the sea level will led to 20 percent of the land mass being covered by sea water. Thus, we must act now to prevent this imending doom of rising sea level.
