Essay topics:

We have observed a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades. It is a slow increase, and despite the alarmist attitudes of some, it is nothing to be worried about. By analyzing the data and looking into the matter clearly, we can find that this is a normal process that has happened before.

Even though we have documented a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn't the reason for the increase in the sea level. That ice is already in the water, so it displaces it already. Think of ice cubes in your glass of water, when they melt it doesn't make the water from the glass spill over. The same thing happens when the ice cap melts. Since the Ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into a liquid state, nothing drastic happens.

When it comes to the source for the increase in the sea level, we just don't know where it comes from. Many scientific agencies like NASA have stated that they simply don't know from where all this new water is coming. So it is still a great unknown

The sea level has been fluctuating ever since the continents have emerged from the primordial ocean. We have seen many changes through the eons, half of our current landmass was submerged at one point. The same will probably happen later, and it will be through a slow and gradual process. Enough time will pass for humanity to adjust

The reading passage explains about the issue of the rise of the sea level. The passage describes that this issue is not concerning and is very much normal. However the professor contradicts the reading passage saying that the issue is alarming and need immediate attention.
Firstly, it is explained in the reading passage, that the polar ice are melting and there is no effect of such melting in the rise of sea level as such melted ice were already part of the sea. However, the lecturer provide example of the permafrost, which is the ice located in the land. The rapid melting of this ice due to various human activities resulted in the increase in the sea level. She provides name of the island like Greenland, Siberia where, such permafrost are located. Melting of such ice, results in the extreme mount of the sea level.
Next, it is mentioned in the reading that NASA has no any scientific reasoning regarding the accumulation of the new water that supports the of augmentation of sea level. However, the lecturer mentions that many scientific research and NASA has proven connection between the ocean swallowing the land part and adding it to the water portion resulting in the alarming rise of water level. Also, it is claimed that the current study found melting of permafrost, due to the green house effect caused by the burning of the fossil fuel, as the reason behind augmentation of the water level.
The author of the paragraph acclaimed that the fluctuation of water level is nothing new and has happened from the beginning, since emergence of the primordial ocean. Hence, no impact could be seen on the land and people residing on them. However, the lecturer contradicts this statement saying that the global warming has resulted in alarming rise of the temperature. As a result, the permafrost are melting excessively in short period. If this continues, then within short time, 20% of the landmass will dissolve beneath the water level. So, the lecturer suggests to act fast and act now to stop the alarming effect of rise in water level as there is less time to adjust for the humankind.
In this way, the reading and the lecture contradict each other’s opinion.
