Essay topics: TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task
In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
The article states that offering four-day jobs instead of five day jobs could help economy, companies and employees who accept this offering by providing some reasons of support while the professor dispute with this by explaining how this offering adversely affect the economy, companies and also the employees.
First the reading claims that if companies offer a 4 day work week job and some employees accept it, because the employees would be more alert and relaxed, their performance improves and their errors will be decreased without extra payroll, the lecturer opposes this idea by saying that shifting to 4 day work weeks and hiring new staff in order to compensate that imposes high costs to companies for new employees’ training and medical same as a five day employee plus the expenses for new offices and computers for them.
Second the reading asserts that this offering helps economy by providing new jobs however the professor disagrees and says hiring new staff imposes high costs to companies so many companies go for other solutions such as asking employees to work more may be equal to a five day employees which not only does not provide new jobs but also make available jobs more unpleasant.
Third the reading states that this strategy will improve employees’ life quality by providing more free time for them that they could spend this time with families or on entertainments. The professor again disagrees and believes that this change will threaten the employees and make them risk of losing job because in an economic downturn they are first who will be released. Also they will lose chance of promotions because companies prefer people who has more presence to ensure continues progress of works
