In this set of material the reading passage states that a huge marine mammal is called as Settler's sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island, however finally it became extinct. Since reason of extinction is not obvious, the reading brings three theories for this issue and supports them, on the other hand the professor finds all hypothesizes dubious and the information the professor provides contradict the fact outlined in the reading passage.
First of all, the reading declares that one of the reasons is overhunting. The sea cows’ population could have hunted by native people, because these animals were a rich source of food, in contrast the professor contends that the cow was a massive creature. It was really enormous; hence for providing food, native people did not need to hunt them in large number.
Second, the author of reading proposes that another cause for this extinction may have been ecosystem disturbances. This occurrence could have reduced cows' main source food like Kelp which it is a type of plant and cow's population relied on it; on the contrary the lecture argues that if there was such a ecosystem disturbance, other marine's animals like whale must have declined, however there was not a salient report from those years.
Third, the reading passage believes that the fur traders may have been another reason for justification of this extinction, because they had some weapon that were be able to hunt the cow's population faster. This theory is challenged by the speaker. The professor expresses that when the fur traders arrived to this island, these poor animals had dwindled as much as 100 hundred years ago; hence this theory is refuted like two mentioned theories in above.
