In this set of material, the author and the lecturer disagree on the merit of whether American wood companies would use certification for ecologically sustainable forestry practice. In the reading passage, the writer thinks the international organization effort would not be able to reach the success in adopting this project because American citizens do not trust advertisement. Also, the certification process would raise the price of the wood products. And, since American wood companies work inside the United States and do not export their product, it is unnecessary to use the certification, and they can sell their goods to their content consumers. In contrary, the professor challenges this and presents three counterclaims against the passage proving that the reasons are skeptical. Following are briefs interpretation of this perspective.
First of all, the writer states that American community exposed to several of advertising that minimizes the value of the products. Especially, those labeled products of improved or new are not trustworthy anymore for American population; therefore, this certification of the ecological friendly project would not appreciate. However, the professor in the lecture refutes this reason. He believes that American population does not treat all advertisement in the same way. In fact, they can distinguish between the ad claims and independent concerns. Thus, they would favor the independent ecological friendly international certified companies for their products and value them more.
Secondly, the reading passage claims that the process of certification would raise the price of the wood businesses and makes the products more expensive; therefore, people would prefer purchase the cheapest uncertified products. For this, American wood companies would keep their project certified for more profit. On the other hand, the listening passage rebuffs this view. He asserts that the increment in the price would not be more than 5% and American population can value this price and pay more for distinguishing the factor behind that. Furthermore, American community values the projects that protect the environment.
Last but not the least, the reading passage argues that it right this plan of friendly certified wood companies is successful abroad and in outside the United States in foreigner countries, but it is not necessary to do that change inside the United States. Apparently, it is not convincing to develop this business in the States because no need to export the products abroad the country. Whereas the lecturer opposes this argument and proposes that if American wood companies went without certification, successful international certified companies soon would offer their environmentally friendly products inside the USA market and their higher reputation would attract the American consumers. Eventually, the ecological certified foreign companies would force American companies to mimic them to protect their profit.
