Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather that secondary school.
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
In times of Globalization, foreign language knowledge is essential skill for trade and communication sector. There is debate about whether non-native language should be taught from primary or secondary levels in schools. I believe that its better to learn them as early as possible.
With regard to advantages of foreign language education at primary school, children are at a tender age, where they grasp words quickly and easily, so, learning another language can be an easy process. Scientific studies suggests that kids growing in bilingual environment do not face any difficulty in learning them. For instance, offspring of multilingual parents learn to speak by imitating their parents, which can be a natural way to grasp vocabulary. In addition, pupil at primary age learn without distraction, as they are too young to play outdoor sports or spent time on internet, consequently, they have better understanding of non-native languages when they join secondary school.
However, there are certain disadvantages associated with learning languages at primary level, one of them being that kids are immature, so they can mix words between native and non-native languages to form sentences. It can be tough for them to differentiate between both dialects, which could prove hindrance for them to understand grammar and pronunciation. Furthermore, learning new language could take time, which could, otherwise, have been spent on playing. Nonetheless, teachers can make learning process playful and correct children mistakes when they mix up both languages.
All in all, I believe there are more positives then negatives in learning foreign language at primary school. It should be made mandatory, if countries want to make their future generation ready for global challenges.
