Some people believe that government funding of the arts is necessary to ensure that the arts can flourish and be available to all people. Others believe that government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts
Arts are language that all people speak regardless of their racial, culture or social background. Arts are based on creativeness, imagination and innovation. It requires the skills and talent of artists. The topic of funding arts has been debatable over a long period of time. I believe that governmental funding for arts is essential to ensure that arts can flourish and be available to all people for several reasons. However there must be an organization that audit and watch the governmental practices of funding arts so it won’t threaten arts integrity.
Firstly, arts are talent which is given not earned. No one chooses to be a talented artist, musician, poet or even sculptor. This talent does not differentiate among people. It is not specified only for rich people who can promote this talent and have the financial support. Since fine arts are mostly non profitable, some people chose to kill their talent because they needed money for living. They choose a job with good money rather than reinforcing the gift they were given. If government did not sponsor these people and provide them with the necessary funding, many forms of fine arts will diminish and would not have been existed.
Secondly, the glory of the Greek, Roman and ancient Egyptian history was traced through walls of museums and old paintings. They show the progress of a nation civilization, history and culture. That’s why many countries value fine arts and they are quite aware of their national importance and the necessity of funding. For example, cities like Paris, Rome and London allocate a significant part of their budgets for funding arts and museums. They try to gather most of the important pieces from all over the world which in return help them in increasing their touristic activities and national income.
On the other hand, there must be organizations that audit the governmental practices of arts funding. If governments were biased to certain types of arts that serve their political motives, this will threaten the integrity of the arts. For instance, the Soviet Union used to fund arts that support its governmental ideology for a long time.
Finally, arts with all their different forms must be supported and funded by the government to ensure that they are flourished and be available to all people taking into consideration the governmental practices that might threaten integrity of arts.
