Mobile phones have become increasingly popular among the younger population. What are the good and bad effects for this?
The adoption of the mobile phone by young people has been a global phenomenon in recent years. It is now an integral part of adolescents' daily lives and is for the majority, the most popular form of electronic communication. In fact, the mobile phone has turned from a technological to social tool. The reduction n the cost of hand sets, their smaller size and the introduction of pre-paid cards in the 1990's contributed to the surprisingly rapid adoption rate by young people. And, the impact on the mobile phone on young peoples' peer groups has been extensive.
To begin with, cellphone makes the people to contact easily with each other. A mobile has been an essential instrument to enable young people to organise their social life. The ability of the mobile to directly contact a person allows young people even more flexibility and spontaneity in their lives. At the same time, young people are able to arrange or rearrange social fuctions extremely quickly which leads to a "more fluid culture of information social interaction". Furthemore, cell phones provide security for youngesters and parents who worry about them, help is never out of reach and parents can check on their children easily. Another important benefit is that, it provide vast knowledge regarding any subjects with the help of internet.
However, along with these positive impacts, there are bad aspects to young people's mobile use. These includes hiding behind the technology from emotionally distressing events, such as ending relationships, ostracism of those with out mobile phones and cyber bullying. Many young people choose to text rather than to talk about awkward or emotionally difficult situations, this will affect on their capacity to interact with each other. Another negative aspect of young people's mobile use is to bully others. Bullying using technology is a phenomena which children and adolscents seem to be increasingly using to harm others. The consequences of face-to-face bullying include increased levels of anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance , psychosomatic symptoms and even suicide.
Other than the psychological problems, the usage of cell phone is also known to come heavy on our eyes and thumb in the form of repetitive strain injuries, which are similar to those injuries that are caused as a result of using computer for a long period on a regular basis. More over, while cellphones may improve socialization for teenegers, it restricts the bond of people that these teens come across and widens the gap between them and their parents.
To conclude, mobile phone is a status symbol for young people. They use their phones in a positive wayss to organise and maintain their networks.Although , there are also negative impacts on young peoples' peer relationships.
