Both the reading and lecture are about Robert E. Peary who traveled to reach the North Pole in 1909; however, there are a lot of negative views toward the valid of this issue. The reading provides three reasons to advocate this trip. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor finds all reasons dubious due to the lack of solid evidence.
First of all, the author of reading contends that National Geographic commended a committee to survey Peary's equipment and records and finally the result was positive. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She declares that since National Geographic supported Peary with a big fund and as a matter a fact this institution and Peary were close friends; consequently, their results were biased and far away from objective. The professor elaborates on this by mentioning that the investigations just lasted two days; hence, they could not have worked accurately.
Secondly, the article states that this story that Peary could arrive to North Pole in 37 days, was tested by an explorer who was called Tom Avery. He applied to the same route with the same type of dogsled and even with the same number of doges and again the conclusions was exact and reliable. This argument is rebutted by the professor. The lecturer points out that the weight of equipment of Avery were much less than Peary because Avery's food carried by airplane. Moreover, the condition of climate in Avery's time had big difference with Peary's time; subsequently, this comparison is not convincing.
Finally, the reading passage argues that there are some photos which their shadow have been investigated and measured by researchers. This conclusion could be drawn that shadow of photos corresponds with sun's position in The North Pole. On the other hand, the professor refutes this suggestion. She expresses that these photos have taken in one hundred years ago with primitive camera which may have created fuzzy images, so during time, their shadow can be blurred or disappeared.
