The author believes that growth in human population, and as a result growth in agriculture, has lead to a decline in birds pupolations. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. She explains why the author is not right about his points.
First, the author states that humans' population growth has converted birds' habitats to living and working areas, therefore, their population has decreased dramatically. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that converting some habitats to cities has provided opportunities for specific kinds of birds, such as seagulls and hawks to thrive.
Second, the author suggests that conversion of some other natural habitats of birds in rural areas to farms, has also lead to a decrease in bird populations in those areas. On the otherhand, the lecturer contends that specifically in the United States, less number of lands are being used for agricultural use every year, providing that new crops, which are being cultivated, are more productive than before.
Finally, the author asserts that increased use of pesticides, which is the result of increased agriculture, harms birds either when they drink contaminated water as well as when they eat poisoned insects, in such a way that they either die or they cannot reproduce. Conversely, the lecturer states that not only new pesticides have been developed that are less toxic, but also new crops are being developed that are more resilient to pests.
