zebra mussel
The article discusses the invasion of zebra mussels cannot be stopped, so they pose a serious threat to fish populations across the North America. The author provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that the zebra mussel migration do not pose any danger for fish populations and he refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the spread of zebra mussel might be unstoppable because zebra attach it self to ships bottom. The professor opposes this point by explaining that this point was true in the past in the case of mussels invaded Europe. He adds that today, there are many effective ways to prevent zebra from spreading. For example, refilled the bottom of ships with ocean water, the salt in that water will be able kill zebra mussel effectively.
Second, the article posits that since zebra mussels are carried to new inhabitat, they will dominate the area. The professor, on the other hand, states that this domination is just only in the beginning time. He explains that birds will adopt themselves for these new food resources and begin to feed on zebra mussels. Therefore, because of birds usually eat a lot, they will devastate zebra mussels populations and they no longer able to control the area.
Third, the reading avers that zebra mussels are likely to cause damage in fish populations, since they are plankton eaters. The professor refutes this point by saying that even though zebra mussels are plankton eaters and would cause harm to this certain population , they can be a good source of food nutrients for other fish populations. He concludes that mussels can have negative impacts on planktons, but they will provide many positive impacts on bottom fish populations.
