The author mentions some benefits of genetically modified trees over natural trees to indicate that they are reasonable option for different trees. The lecturer concedes some suggested benefits of modified trees, but he believes that they merits are not as well as they may sound. He refutes the aforementioned arguments and offers some counterclaims.
First, according to the passage, due to the feature of the trees which are hard, they are most likely able to survive under cumbersome circumstances like virus infections. On the contrary, the professor admits the statement to some degree. He also adds that they may be influenced by other diverse conditions in spite of their resistance against some terrible circumstances. For instance, a tree may be designed to survive in front of many harsh climates, but if the climate alters in the future, it would not have the capability of being survive anymore. Moreover, distinct trees are better adapted to various conditions.
Second, the genetically modified trees provide the farmers with more benefits since their products, including fruits, and wood are by far more than natural trees, so they are more economical. Conversely, the speaker points out to the fact that other aspects should be considered. He speculates that it has some hidden costs, on the grounds that every time the farmers want to plant those trees, they have to but its seeds which are expensive.
Finally, based on the reading, the genetically modified trees can answer human demands for woods. Furthermore, it help the areas in which many tree species are in danger. Nevertheless, the lecturer alludes to the point that their growth is aggressive, and they may damage other types of trees in the habitat. As a matter of fact, they out-compete with other indigenous plants in that region, and they can consume their resources such as soil nutrients and water. Therefore, it is plausible that other plants endanger and disappear after some time.
