The author believes that Robert E. Peary's claim that he reached northpole in 1909 is legit, and he postulets some poinst to support his belief. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. She explains why the author is not right about his points, and that his points are neither convincing nor sufficient.
First, the author states that National Geographic Society confirmed Peary's claim by conducting a complete investigation. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes the author's statement by asserting that National Geographic Society consisted of Peary's friends and their judgment was biased, provided that they invested a lot in Peary's expedition.
Second, the author proposes that since Tom Avery's recent trip to North Pole took same amount of time as Peary's, his claim seems to be true. On the contrary, the lecturer opposes the author's assertion by contending that Avery's trip differed from Peary's in many ways. Not only his cargo weighted less, since his food was dropped off with airplane, but also the weather conditions under which he travled were more conveinient.
Finally, the author suggests that by measuring the length of the shadows in Peary's photographs, it was confirmend that the Sun was in the same position as it would be in the North Pole. In contrast, the lecturer counters the author's opinion by argueing that photos were rouphly a hundred years old, thereby, shadows in the picture were probably blurred and faded. For this reason, the measurements that took place could not be precise.
