Both the reading and the lecture are talking about genetically modified trees. While the author believes that genetic modification can have many benefits, the professor casts doubt on every reason that has been given in the reading passage.
First, the author states that genetically modified tress are harder than nature trees, but the professor contradicts that by saying that these kind of trees are only resistant to one condition and if they exposed to a harsh condition other than the one they are designed to, they cannot stand the situation. And there is diversity among natural trees so in a bad condition at least some of the species will survive, while genetically modified trees will be wiped out.
Second, the author believes that genetic modification will have great economic benefits, however the professor refutes that by saying genetic modification has some hidden costs, like the seeds of these kind of trees will be expensive and it’s not possible to just gather the seeds and re-plant them. Due to the law farmers have to pay the companies every time they want to use the seeds.
Third, the reading claims that using genetically modified trees will prevent over exploitation of natural trees and will save the endangered native ones, but the lecture apposes this claim by illustrating that these trees will be planted among native trees and because they grow aggressively, they will consume all the nutrients and water that are vital for existence of natural trees and that will endanger the very trees that we are trying to protect.
