The lecture and the reading passage both discuss the spreading of the Zebra mussel from the Eastern Europe that its original habitats to parts of North America. On the one hand, the reading clearly state that the mussel spreading cannot be stopped, and cause a serious threat to freshwater fishes. On the other hand, the lecture refutes this, by saying that the arguments were questionable and implausible, and the spreading of mussel under control.
To begin with, the reading state that the strong suggestion it was the mussel can attach with the ship's bottom, and it was called ballast water so by movement of the ships the spreading of these animals increased. However, the lecture refutes that they could not control because they did not have enough knowledge. The professor provide an example that spreading the mussel to North America was not true because they did not empty the water in there water.
Secondly, the reading makes arguments is that the mussel had a high reproduction rate, and there was not predators. Conversely, the lecture argues this point by saying that in the beginning it was not predators, but after that the birds started ate the mussels.
Lastly, the reading state that because the mussel became dominant they compete for food with other freshwater fishes. The lecture counter this claims by pointing out that it was a negative impact on fishes, but the positive one the mussels generate food that help the fishes.
