The reading passage claims that Humpback whales move long distances search for food and mating purposes and how they migrate such distances is a dilemma. Indeed, there is a possibility that Humpback whales navigate by stars like ancient humans did. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author contends that these whales were intelligent and had used stars for navigation. In fact, they benefited from a cognitive ability that provides a sound to help them for their orientation. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no real connection between intelligence and cognitive ability. In fact, other animals also have this ability like ducks, which is average. So, these animals happen to be intelligent by nature since they were born and is intrinsical.
Furthermore, the author holds the view that humpbacks whales relied on stars at night and migrate in straight lines and straight direction and orient themselves by external forces. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that Humpback whales sent external forces and bio magnetite and earth magnetic field both play a key role in their navigation and orientation.
Finally, as set forth by the author these whales often show unusual behavior and maintain their heads above the water. This behavior is called spy-hopping and through this habit, they look for stars in order to navigate. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that humpback whales rarely show such kind of behaviors and also, other animals like sharks use this behavior known as spy-hopping. In addition, Humpback whales exhibit this behavior during the day where there is no star.
