the possibilty of the use of an ancient weapon by the Greeks in a war against the Romans
The passage and the talk both discuss the possibility of the use of an ancient weapon by the Greeks in a war against the Romans. The author claims that it was unlikely that Greeks could exert this kind of advanced weapon on that time and it is more of a myth. The lecturer, however, refutes the author's assessment. She demonstrates three reasons to cast doubt on the claims made in the reading.
The first allegation of the passage against which the lecturer argues is that the ancient Greeks were not technologically such an advanced that could make such big reflecting mirror. In contrast, the professor highlights the fact that they had not to produce such a big copper mirror from a single part of a sheet. She asserts that they could manufacture that huge parabolic copper mirror by shaping smaller piece of that and adhering them together.
Second, according to the reading, by means of the polished surface of the copper it takes a long time, about ten minutes, to set the wood on fire so, Romans would not be such a long time motionless. ; Although, the speaker finds this idea debatable. She bolsters her opinion by stating that Romans' ships were not only made of wood and some materials they had used in their ships could catch fire quickly.
Finally, the lecture contradicts this fallacy of the passage that the mirror was not more efficient than flaming arrows, saying that, the Roman soldiers were familiar with the flaming arrows and they could preserve their ships from them; while, suddenly catching fire in some places of their ships would be surprising for them. Therefore, the tremendous mirror was remarkably effective.
