TPO-9 INTEGRATED ESSAY
The lecture and the passage are both about Fuel cell engines. The reading claims that fuel cell engines have myriad of advantages over internal-combustion engines. However, the lecturer does not feel that fuel cell engines are as beneficial as the author assumes.
First of all, lecturer thinks that use of hydrogen to generate electricity is not a solution. Hydrogen is not easily available in the usable form. In order to utilize energy and create electricity from hydrogen, it is very necessary to make it in pure liquid form which is a highly artificial substance. On the other hand author assumes fuel cell engines are based on renewable resources.
Secondly, Production of pure hydrogen creates lot of pollution which will affect the environment. The purification process of hydrogen require lot of energy and burning of oil and coal. Considering these aspects lecturer thinks that fuel cell engines are not at all a perfect source of power.
Thirdly, It is also not a cost saving option because of the highly expensive manufacturing process. Its manufacturing require the use of platinum which is a rarely available and highly expensive metal. Manufacturers have not been so far successful in replacing the metal platinum with another material. While the reading states that it is an economically competitive to use fuel cell engines and people have to spend very less money for that.
