online and traditional encyclopedias
The text is explaining disadvantage of online encyclopedias and provides some reasons why they are not reliable and good sources for research. On the other hand, the professor goes against them and explains how important online encyclopedias are and gives some discussion in this regard.
Firstly, the text explains that online encyclopedias often are not reliable and have a deep lack on having academic credential, on the other hand traditional encyclopedias are more accurate. The professor goes against this claim and says that, if we are looking for a source which has not any kind of error, we never ever can find it. She believes, however, there are some errors in online encyclopedias, but it is easier to correct them compared to errors in traditional encyclopedias and if there be an error in a traditional encyclopedia, it will remain for decades but it is not the same in online encyclopedias.
Secondly, the text claims that even if we accept that base knowledge of online encyclopedias are true, they are in a serious threat of hackers and users of online encyclopedias cannot even know what errors might an online encyclopedia have. The professor refutes this point by saying that, there is a good protection against hacking treats and also online encyclopedias can use some especial formats which are not editable and this will eliminate this chance that online encyclopedias be edited by other people.
Thirdly, the text says that online encyclopedias pay too deep attention and focus on all different fields. It says that, in online encyclopedias, common topic and be shown as important as a serious topic. But the professor refutes this claim and says that, online encyclopedias provide this chance for us to know about anything which is worth to know and traditional encyclopedias based on their limited space have to decide what topic is important and what is not. so we do not have access to all topics. In this way, they do not pay attention to people's interest and it is while online encyclopedias publish any kind of topics and no one decides about the importance of the topics and diversity of the topics in online encyclopedias is one of their greatest advantages.
