The bar chart compares the proportion of English and Welsh in owned and rented houses from 1918 to 2011. In general, the growing rate of households in the two types of accommodation was inverse.
In 1918, the percentage of families in owned accommodation was dramatically low, at approximately 24%. However, the proportion rose steadily through time and eventually leveled with that of households in rented properties in 1971, meeting the mark 50%. In the following years, the number continued to grow and peaked in 2001, at just under 70%.
On the other hand, the percentage of households in rented accommodation in England and Wales was high in the beginning but fell drastically throughout the course of 93 years. In 1918, the proportion was at approximately 78% which was about 3 times higher than that of owned. Surprisingly, it started to decline, plunging down to just under 60% in 1961.. The percentage hit the lowest point of 31% in 2001, which was only half of that of owned residents. However, the number started to bounce back in 2011.
