In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses that several theories about the possible sources that might be caused by the odd sounds. While in the listening the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and believes that "Quackers" sound is a very strange phenomenon and the actual cause of this phenomenon is not identified. But the suggested reason in the text is not convincing.
First of all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that this sound creates by whales. However, the professor claims that at first, this theory seems reasonable. But, it is highly unlikely that this sound produced by whales. Because the area is where for petrol extraction and whales need to come to surface water for birthing. Thus, these whales should be could detected by submarines sonar.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that this sound produced by the giant squid. Because this strange sound appeared first in the 1960 and disappeared in the 1990 decays. Therefore,it is incredible that these invertebrates animals caused this sound in one decay and suddenly this sound disappear for two decades.
Finally, in the text, it is stated that the sound may be emitted by the foreign submarine unintentionally. The professor subscribes that this sound change direction very quickly. And there is not a technology that can produce sound in one direction and change it's direction quickly.
