Gun Trafficking
In El Salvador, where a person is murdered every hour, it is hard to imagine families situations having to cope with insecurity and poverty at the same time.50% of the guns used for homicides in this country come from the United States. In Guatemala the number of illegal firearms goes up to 1,000,000.
Gangs are the principal buyer of these weapons. Gangs are formed as a way of survival in the neighborhoods and to protect themselves from other gangs, since the police force is not effective in the region. Gangs get together to fight against each other, protect their territories and defend their families. Active members of these groups are also, usually related not only to guns, but to drugs and narc trafficking.
At the same time, US firearms trafficking to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras has increased rapidly and at significant levels. Around half million guns were purchased annually to be trafficked to Mexico from 2010 to 2012. The use of straw purchasers is used as a mayor tactic in illegal firearms purchasing in the US. The United States does not have any federal law to regulate the purchases.
The black market of guns in the US is worth around 250 million dollars per year and thousands of human lives in Central America.
