The graph below shows UK acid rain emissions, measured in millions of tonnes, from four different sectors between 1990 and 2007.
The line graph indicates how much acid rain was released by four different industries over 17 years in England.
Overall, it is clear from the chart that the total amount of acid rain fell substaintially in that period. Particularly, emissions from electricity, gas and water supply, which represented the highest figures in the first five years, experienced the fastest decrease. Moreover, its position was replaced by transportation and communication in the final years.
In 1991, over 3 million tone of acid rain was released due to household needs such as electricity, water, etc. Lower than that, transportation, and communication accounted for about 2 million tone. Simultaneously, domestic and other industries produced more than 0.5 million tone of acid rain.
By 2003, the amount of acid rain emmissed by electricity, water and gas increased slightly and surpassed the transportation and communication’s figures, which fell drastically, at just under 1 million tone. After that, those 2 statistics all went down slightly to approximately 0.5 million tone in 2007. Meanwhile, the acid rain emissions from other industries and domestic fluctuated marginally to 0.3 and 1.3 million tone in the final year.
