The author of the reading passage holds that there are three effective solutions to protect birds from being injured by hitting glass windows, while the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite view.
To begin with, the author claims that replacing the regular glass with one-way glass that is transparent only from one side can drive birds away. However, the lecturer refutes that a big problem of it is that one-way glass reflects lights in a way similar to a mirror, and it is difficult for birds to understand the difference between the reflection of an object and the real one. Therefore, if birds see the sky and trees being reflected on the outside of a one-way glass window, they will try to fly right into it as they think it is a natural scenery.
Moreover, the author believes that painting colorful lines or other designs on windows can remind birds the existence of glass and allow people to see through from the unpainted gap. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that it is not practical because birds would mistakenly consider the openings in the glass where there is no paint as holes and fly right through them subsequently. So, if a business want to carry out the solution, the unpainted area should be considerably small so that it is impossible for a bird to fly though. For that matter, however, the room with such windows will be too dark to live in.
Finally, the author puts forward that electromagnets can steer birds in a different direction and keep them from hitting on the building. Instead, the lecturer retorts that this solution will not work well. It is true that birds have an innate ability to sense Earth's magnetic fields and use it as a compass to determine directions when flying, but they are navigated by it only when traveling for a great distance, such as migrating from a cold place to a warm one in winter. Yet when taking a short trip like moving from one site in the city to another, the only navigation they use is the vision-to sense the brightness of light via eyes. As a result, the third solution will not make any difference.
