The author of the reading passage claims that the way animals manage their migration is perplexed and intricate. For instance, there are several theories which show humpback whales use stars as navigational tools for their migration in long distances. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and present some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author holds the view that these whales are intelligent animals and they use their brain high well-developed cognitive ability to navigate by stars. In contrast, the lecturer underlines the idea that there is no connection between intelligent and navigation. Indeed, some birds also use this method to navigate long distances and they are not highly intelligent.
The author also asserts that humpback whales use straight lines for their navigation if they orient by some forces. Conversely, the professor brings up the idea that earth magnetite fields help animals to navigate. In fact, the brains of humpback whales are sensitive to these fields due to the presence of bio magnetite in their brains. So, this will provide an opportunity for the humpback whale to orient by magnetite field.
Finally, as set forth by the author these whales use an odd behavior called spy-hopping, which is very rare and provide some information for navigational purposes. Conversely, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that although it is a rare behavior, other animals like sharks use this behavior to hunt other animals. Also, this behavior has been seen during the day. So, hardly can humpback whales navigate by spy hopping behavior.
