Tpo23 Q1
In this set of materials, the reading states that the number of yellow cedar tree has been gradually decreasing. Meanwhile, scientists proposed some explanation for this decline. However, the lecturer believes that we still do not know the exact reason of the issue, and also explains that these findings are not adequate, thus he provides some evidence to refute each of author's reasons.
First of all, it is mentioned in the passage that insects have some influences on the reduction of this kind of tree. On the contrary, the lecturer states that this tree is more resistant to the insects such as barks, and it is saturated with chemicals and poisons. He explains that this is not fundamentally the cause of the reduction.
Furthermore, the author of the reading declares that the reduction of the brown bears may be the cause of the issue. On the contrary, the lecturer states that in mainland and inland parts of North America there are not any bears, while we still can see a reduction in the population of the yellow cedar.
Finally, the passage claims that the climate change may attribute to the reduction of this tree. To argue with this statement, the speaker asserts that if we consider that a cedar tree is more likely to die in higher elevations, which is cooler than lower elevations, we can still observe that this tree is die in warmer climates. Therefore, this belief cannot be true that cedar trees are sensible with climate changes.
