TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task
In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for birds, these trends are likely to continue, with the result that the number of birds in the United States will necessarily decline.
First, as human populations and settlements continue to expand, birds' natural habitats will continue to disappear. Forests, wetlands, and grasslands will give way to ever more homes, malls, and offices. As the traditional areas suitable for birds keep decreasing, so will the size of the bird populations that depend on those vanishing habitats.
Second, agricultural activities must increase to keep pace with the growing human population. The growth of agriculture will also result in the further destruction of bird habitats as more and more wilderness areas are converted to agricultural use. As a result, bird populations in rural areas will continue to decline.
Third, as human settlements expand and agriculture increases, the use ofchemical pesticides will also increase. Pesticides are poisons designed to kill agricultural and home garden pests, such as insects, but inevitably, pesticides get into the water and into the food chain for birds where they can harm birds. Birds that eat the poisoned insects or drink contaminated water can die as a result, and even if pesticides do not kill birds outright, they can prevent them from reproducing successfully. So pesticides have significantly contributed to declines in bird population, and because there will continue to be a need to control agricultural pests in the future, this decline will continue.
In the topic, the author represents an argument by giving different points that how because of increase of human population, farming methods and urbanization, destroy bird’s natural habitats and there is a uniform decline in their population. And in the lecture, the speaker counters the argument by saying the points are unconvincing.
The first point the author represents that human’s settlement and increase in population majorly destroy birds’ population. As human builts more homes, malls, and offices, they cut down more forests and that desultory of suitable areas for birds. The speaker though opposes the idea by saying; the argument is not actually true. There is a growth of the bird’s population because of urbanization, as urbanization provides more suitable places for birds. There is an increase in a population of sea eagles and pigeons and also the population of hawks. So, the point in the text is totally unconvincing.
The second argument that the author gave that due to increases in human population more areas used as farming and wild areas were destroyed. This farming method destroys habitats of birds. The speaker counters the point by saying, in reality, in the United State fewer lands are used as a farmland. Peoples used more scientific and more productive crops in farming so that less land could use.
The last Argument the author presented that because the use of chemical pesticides in farming, the bird’s population decreased. The pesticides mix with water and the birds drink that toxic water and also easts the toxic insects, which killed them or caused them irregular reproduction. The speaker informed that after get knowledgeable about the calumny of chemical pesticides, now peoples use less chemical products. Now, instead of using pesticides peoples used more genetically strong crops that prevent insects naturally.
