In the ancient days, manuscripts and spoken word were the only ways to gain information or to communicate with people. As humans started advancing, manuscripts turned into books. Books were extensively used to gain information about any particular subject. Shelves and shelves of books were preserved and copied so that masses could benefit from them. Time passed by and technology began to advance. Now, in the 21st century, we have internet, television, CDs and books to gain information and knowledge. So, this shows that yes, books are no longer necessary to gain information or to become a well-educated person.
Everything that a person needs to know about a particular subject is available on the internet. If a person wants to know how to travel in a particular country, the internet is enough to acquire some information about it. There is absolutely no need to read travel guides or guidebooks about a certain location. If someone wants to know the facts about a historical event or about a scientific discovery 100 years ago, the internet provides enough information for that person to become an expert is the chosen topic. Various informative shows on television are helpful in providing knowledge. Channels such as Discovery TV, National Geography, Animal Planet, History TV18, etc. give a variety of knowledge while simultaneously making it fun and entertaining. Mirade of channels on television and websites on the internet help in educating people while making it interesting. Students all over the world, from kindergarten to masters level, take the help of television or internet to gain knowledge or process information. Schools use digital softwares with artistic visuals to make learning fun for students, which a step ahead than using illustrated books.
This might make us believe that books are not as important, but they are still an integral part of information gaining process. Reading is considered as an exercise for the mind. A very popular opinion is that reading from a printed book is always better than reading from a screen. The experience of reading a handheld, an ink-printed book is very different than compared to a screen and in a good way. There are many life lessons to be learned from the classics that have been brought into this world. Enid Blyton, J.K. Rowling, Austen Jane, Sudha Murthy, Ruskin Bond, and many more amazing authors have given us so much to read and think about. Scientific books which have information about various topics ranging from biology to engineering are published to help students in gaining knowledge. For someone who is an avid reader, the love for books will never fade. For someone who does not like reading, there are many more options to become educated, including books.
So, while books have been and are being extensively used by the worlds' population, it is no longer necessary to acquire education. Various above-mentioned sources are also widely used to learn and know about various subjects. While nothing can replace the love people have for reading novels, comics and stories; educational books are not necessary to be carried around as you could carry it around in your phone nowadays. Specific pages or paragraphs necessary could also be marked and kept. Acquiring education is subjective and depends on person to person on how they choose to acquire it. We need to take advantage of the various knowledge offered to us, irrespective of the source.
