TPO 09- Car manufacturers and governments have been eagerly seeking a replacement for the automobile's main source of power, the internal-combustion engine. By far the most promising alternative source of energy for cars is the hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine, which uses hydrogen to create electricity that, in turn, powers the car. Fuel-cell engines have several advantages over internal-combustion engines and will probably soon replace them.
The reading and lecture are both about replacement of automobile main source of power. The author of the reading believes that fuel cell engines has more positive outcome compared to internal combustion engines. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that the arguments are inaccurate compared to facts.
First of all, the author points out that internal combustion needs petroleum , gasoline or diesel fuel to run. The article notes that petroleum will run out soon and that hydrogen fuel cell engine are easily available and renewable. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that hydrogen is not easily available. Furthermore, she argues that it is present in common substances like water but it is not usable in that form. In addition, it must be obtained in its pure state which is difficult to handle and store. It must be manufactured in factories which requires -250 celsius and needs elaborate cooling and is not easily available.
Secondly, the author contends that hydrogen can solve pollution problem. The article establishes that the by product of hydrogen engines is only water. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that it will not address the problem in pollution. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that it will only create more pollution to the environment due to the process of purification which is burning of coal and oil which can produce more harmful toxins in the air.
Finally, the author states that fuel engines are more economical. The article denotes that the engine would require less fuel consumption. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it is not cost efficient to use fuel cell engines. She puts forth the idea that in order to manufacture fuel cell engine they need platinum to make it. In addition, the use of this material is very expensive and without platinum there will be no chemical reaction to produce energy.
