The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph illustrates the number of senior citizens in the past and their future number for three different countries namely USA, Sweden, Japan in percentage between 1940 and 2040. In general, the USA and Sweden show a similar trend of fluctuations as well as a gradual increase to a certain extent whereas for Japan the changes are overall gentle but rapid at the end of the period.
To begin with, in the USA, initially, people who aged 65 or more were about 9% during 1940 and showed a slight increase over the next 20 years, after which it showed a significant change of 5% for following two decades. From there it reached and maintained a plateau till 2018 (approximately). Maintaining an increasing trend from the leveled portion expected populace of elderly people is around 22%.
Sweden followed a similar trend like the USA till 1980 with a 6% initial population of aged people of the mentioned age. Then decreasing slightly between 1980 and 2000 it reached a peak of 20% somewhere between 2000 and 2020. Again suffering a decline just after 2020 the anticipated older people of 65 or more is 25%, a slightly higher than the USA.
On the contrary, Japan had the lowest elderly people with 5% in 1940 as compared to others and experiencing a 2% declination it plateaued for one or two years after 1980. As the period of stability ended in 1980, a gradual increased took place and is projected to do so until it reaches 10% between 2020 and 2040. From there encountering a gradual escalation following a steep surge at around 2025 it will be 27%.
To conclude proportionate populace of senior citizen of Japan was the lowest at 1940 from there it reaches maximum percentage after a century as compared to the USA or Sweden. Also for USA and Sweden the era 2020 to 2040 a gradual increment will be observed on the contrary to Japan, which will see a sudden boom in elderly population.
