the salinity of waters
The reading and the lecture are both about the salinity of water in a lake. The author of the reading mentions that there are several ways to reduce the level of salinity the lake has. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt the idea of the reading when she says that the solutions are unreal and not practical.
First, it is mention in the reading that exist a possibility of reducing the level of salt in the lake. This would be heating the water until it evaporate. As a result salt would be left and the water in the lake would have less salt. However the professor refutes this idea. She mentions that if water is evaporated, not only would have salt after that, but also would have others solid materials as a selenium that will be dangerous for human's health.
Second, the author of the reading says that another solution is mixing the water from the lake with water from the ocean through pipelines or canals, as a result the water in the lake will be more diluted and less salty. On the other hand, the professor disagrees this. She adds that the construction of pipelines and canals are very expensive, the local government does not have resources to allow the building of this pipelines.
Finally, the reading states that would be a good idea if in the lakes would build many walls that divided the grade of salinity in the waters. On the other hand the professor mentions that this it is not a good idea because due the earthquakes the walls that separated the different waters could collapse and the waters from one level of salinity would mix with the other one.
