In 1981, people enjoyed most about butter at 140 grams while only a smaller level at roughly 90 grams of margarine were reported. It was not until 1996 that low fats and reduced spreads was introduced with a small portion at 10 grams. Over the next 20 years from 1981, the consumed butter figure increased a little by nearly 20 grams to peak at 160 in 1986 before falling dramatically by 110 grams in 2007. Meanwhile, a small decline was experienced in the recorded margarine quantity, which hit a low of 80 grams in 1986, but rose later and levelled off at 100 grams during five years to 1996 when the margarine consumption rate dropped again and bottomed out at 40 grams the last year of the period.
By contrast, the period between 1996 and 2001 witnessed a rapid growth to more than 80 grams in the amount of low-fat and reduced spread measurement, which was followed by a slight dip, but still the most favored jam in the final six years.
