TPO45:Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge specific points made in the reading passage.
The article and the lecture are both about the presence of bees on the Earth 200 million years ago. The author of the article doubts this fact and provides three reasons of support. The lecturer challenges the statement made by the author. She is of the opinion that bees were possibly existed in the old days. She states that the arguments made by the author are not convincing.
First of all, the author claims that there are no fossils of actual bees dated to 200 million years ago. The lecturer, however, posits that although this argument may be true, bee fossils could not be preserved in that time. Bees' fossils normally preserved in a stick material called resin secreted from some trees. These trees were rare in ancient time and became available later on. As a result, there was no resin to preserve the bees' fossils.
Secondly, The author suggests that there were no flowery plants in old times and bees depend on flowers as their source of food. The professor, on the other hand, rebuts this by asserting that bees today are feeding on flowery plants but not in the old times. In fact, bees in the past fed on none flowery plants like ferns, and pine trees. Later on, when the flowery plants become available, bees adapt to feed on them. This mutual relationship between bees and flowery planets becomes stable after that.
Finally, it is stated in the article that the structures were found in Arizona lack some significant details for bees' nest. This argument is challenged by the speaker. He puts forth the idea that although these fossils lack the spiral cap to support the nest, they have a special water-proofing substance that the bees provide their nest with to keep it from the water. This substance has a distinctive chemical structure that resembles The material used by bees today.
