Integrated writing (TPO 49)
In the reading section, the writer claims that humpback whales may navigate by the stars in order to migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes because of their high intelligence, ability to migrate in straight lines, and a unique ability to look upward. However, in the lecture, the professor casts doubt on the reading points by stating that all of these explanations are fascinating, but they are not very convincing.
First of all, the writer contends that humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by. In contrast, the lecturer asserts that although humpback whales are intelligent, scientists did not find a direct relation between intelligence and navigational skills. Also, scientists found a type of duck which is not very intelligent but can use stars for navigation. As a result, the ability to use stars for navigation and intelligence is not really connected.
Furthermore, contrary to the idea in the reading section suggesting that humpback whales migrate in straight lines, and just the animals which can use some external objects can maintain their movement in straight lines, the professor mentions that humpback whales may use another ability to move in straight lines. He states that humpback whales have bio-magnet in their brains. Thus, this component can help them to use earth's magnetic field to move in straight lines for long distances.
In addition, even though the writer mentions that humpback whales are sometimes look upward in the sky for minutes at a time which is called spy-hopping, they lecturer mentions that other animals use this method for other purposes rather than navigation. He mentions that sharks use spy-hopping to look for animals they want to hunt. Also, humpback whales use spy-hopping during day times which no stars can be seen in the sky.
