As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used. While there is still no universally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories. One theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely residential, with each housing hundreds of people. Supporters of this theory have interpreted Chaco great houses as earlier versions of the architecture seen in more recent Southwest societies. In particular, the Chaco houses appear strikingly similar to the large, well-known "apartment buildings" at Taos, New Mexico, in which many people have been living for centuries
Both article and professor deal with different proposal about the usage of "great houses" in Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. The article state that there are three opinions about this structure and explains them. However, the professor casts doubt on each author's reasons and opposes them.
First, the article states that this huge buildings were purely residential, each of them involve hundred of people. The article brings similarity between this buildings with "apartment buildings" at Taos, New Mexico as an important evidence. However, the professor refutes this point of view by explaining that in contrast with outside perspective of these apartments which look like residential buildings, from inside perspective there are no evidences for living of people. He adds that there were only a few fire places which are in contrast with this idea that hundred family lived there. Then, he avers that this buildings have not residential goals.
Second, the article claims that Chaco structure used for food storage. It says that they store maize for long time without spoiling in this suitable structures. The professor opposes this by saying that this hypotheses does not support because there is not any trace of maize, also they area not any remained part of big containers which used for storage of maize.
Third, the article brings the third theory about this buildings as it says these big structures used for ceremonial purposes. It brings some archaeological findings like enormous mound for this claim. On the other hand , the professor refutes this point by saying that there were a lot of another materials beside the pots. These material made from sand and stone also some instrumental tools in findings related to construction projects and worker. The remained pot belonged to regular meal pot of worker. He asserts that there is not any evidence that this buildings used as special ceremony places.
