Process : the lifecycle of a butterfly.
The diagram illustrates the butterfly’s life cycle. It consists of a series of changes called metamorphosis.
Life begins as a small egg which is laid on a leaf. Then the baby caterpillar hatches and eats the shell, after which it goes in search of milkweed leaves. As the young caterpillars quickly grow, they shed their skin several times. The caterpillar prepares to lose its skin one more time by finding the underside of a twig and then it begins pupation, losing its coat for the last time.
The pupa takes several minutes to wriggle free. Motionless for about one and a half weeks, it then undergoes a transformation and a new butterfly emerges. At first, the wings are quite small. But over the next hour, they expand to their full size. Finally, the butterfly is ready to fly. The adult will spend its life feeding on nectar from flowers and reproducing, beginning the life cycle once again.
