Whistle's painting women in a white dress is similar to recently found painting
The reading and the listening both are about the painting of the young woman in a white dress which resembles the painting of James Whistler. The author of the reading passage believes that this painting is made by Whistler. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the reading passage. He thinks that these points are not strong to prove this painting is made by Whistler.
First of all, the author thinks that three years after the Whistler’s death, this painting was included in an exhibition of paintings. It was organized by a close friend of Whistler, so he attributed this painting to Whistler. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He points out that in that exhibition, there was a various collection of paintings. So, just because it was organized by Whistler’s friend, it does not mean that it was the same painting.
Secondly, the author states that the woman in the painting clearly resembles the women in ‘Symphony in white’ and the same style and arrangement of the micro chromatic palate in white and grey looks like Whistler’s painting. The lecturer refutes this point and asserts that in those days, the women face was very famous among the painters. These colors are commonly used by the other painters too. They were very popular colors, so it does not prove that this is Whistler’s painting.
Finally, the author mentions that tiny paintings of butterflies in the right lower corner of the painting were the whistler’s style. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that tiny butterflies are in different shapes and in different colors than Whistler’s painting. Additionally, he used to draw butterflies in the upper left corner of the painting. So, if we look at the painting very closely, it does not look like Whistler’s painting.
