Many years ago, school system mainly focused on the role of teachers played in the educational process. The principal actor in a lesson was the teacher, who was supposed to transmit his knowledge to his students; students, on the other hand, were meant to passively receive what the professor communicated to them. Recently, this method of education has changed dramatically. Lessons are much more students-oriented, and the old passive subjects can now promote the topics on which their education is based on actively. A question can be raised: is the new way of teaching better than the old one?
Surely, the great problem of the old school system was a disaffection of students and, as a result, low-quality learning. If students were simple boxes that should be filled with theories, ideas, and concepts, it would not matter their feelings and their level of interest. This, of course, makes students completely uninterested concerning what they receive and, since their rate of engagement plays an important role in learning, does not permit students to have a good education.
However, it is also true that a strong student-oriented method of teaching has significant problems as well. Indeed, students do not have the competence and the experience to drive their education. It wouldn’t be bizarre if elementary school students decide what they should learn? What would be the adopted criteria to make such a choice? Perhaps, the pleasure a certain theme provokes to them. If this was the case, it would be possible that they skip certain crucial theory while they studying science or certain important facts while learning history.
The best solution seems to be a combination of these two different methods of education. Specifically, teachers should be kept as the leader of students’ education, the subjects capable of providing them guidance in the infinite sea of knowledge. On the other hand, students should exercise an active role by proposing topics that could be connected with both their life and the taught subjects. I remember that in high school, in the hours of topography, we suggested the professor to plan a square in our town. We learned much more than what we would have learned through a traditional lesson because we considered such a square a crucial place for youghts’ social life, which deserved an extreme attention to details.
In conclusion, the author’s statement is partially true. It is welcome that students are more active and truly engaged in what they study. This, however, does not mean the teacher should abdicate his role. In particular, teachers should decide what is more relevant to include in students’ curriculum.
