Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the points made in the reading passage. You have 20 minutes to type your response.
The reading states that fossil sources of energy have some serious problems, and nuclear energy is the solution and gives three reasons for support. However, the professor thinks that nuclear energy will not solve these problems and attacks each of the claims made by the author.
First, the reading states that the fuel that powers nuclear power plants is cheap compared to fossil fuels. However, the lecturer refutes this idea and states that nuclear energy is not cheap. Every nuclear plant needs more money for expertise than fossil plants do. Moreover, nuclear energy plants have to pay a lot of money for legislation. These fees will be paid to governments due to the risk of catastrophic events.
Second, the author claims that the process of creating nuclear energy is relatively safe. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this idea by explaining that accidents still happen. Although there are no such catastrophic results, a lot of hazardous effects are been recorded. For example, the nuclear plant in Pennsylvania had some leakage that didn’t affect society. However, it had to pay more than one billion dollars in order to fix the plant.
Third, the passage states that hazardous radioactive waste generated by nuclear power plants can be effectively managed. Again the lecturer disagrees. He says the waste is not easily controlled. Some of the waste has dangerous reproduced products like the 333p item. This one can be used in nuclear weapons! Furthermore, there are some high-level wastes that remain. These wastes need to be buried underground for more than 100 years which is a very expensive process.
