TPO49-Humpback whales

Essay topics:

TPO49-Humpback whales

The article and the lecture are both about the migration ability of humpback whales and whether they can manage a long-distance migration. The reading believes that humpback is capable of navigating by stars when it migrates. however, the lecturer doubts that if there was sufficient convincing evidence to support the hypothesis and refutes each of the author's points.

To begin with, the author points out that humpback is intelligent enough to use stars as its navigation tool on their way to a far place. The lecturer, however, concerns that the relation between animal intelligence and the capability of using stars to navigate is not solid enough. For instance, he brings up that duck without being proven as highly intelligent animals use stars for orientation as well.

Second, according to the reading, moving in straight lines makes humpback whales to stay in the right direction and avoid being lost in the open ocean. On the contrary, the lecture challenges the argument by indicating that sensing the external objects or physical forces is the key for whales to maintain their direction. there is a magnet built inside their bodies helping them feel the way to the destination.

Finally, the author considers that a special behavior called spy-hopping, which occurs among animals rarely, explains how humpback looks upon the stars to distinguish its way when migrating in a long distance. The lecturer, on the other hand, questions that humpback exhibits such behaviors on the purpose of migration. he further illustrates that sharks, for instance, conduct spy-hooping to hunt for food. Additionally, they behave in this way while there are no stars in the sky, demonstrating that spy-hooping has nothing to do with migration.
