TPO-23 - Integrated Writing Task Populations of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been steadily declining for more than a century now, since about 1880. Scientists have advanced several hypotheses expla
The passage discusses the decrease in the population of the yellow cedar, a species of tree. The text provides three reasons to explain the cause of this decrease. However, the professor in the lecture explains that the mentioned reasons in the article are unconvincing. So, he rejects all of the text's reasons.
First, the passage claims that decline in the population of these trees contributes to insect parasites. These beetles aatack to trees and cause harmful damages to trees. In contrast, the professor rebuts this idea by explaining that healthy trees secrete a unique poison by their leaves and barks. Furthermore, if these insects touch the tree they will dyie. Also, the professor describes that beetles just eat the dead trees.
Second, the article argues that one possibility that related to decline in the population of yellow cedar is bears. Bears is the bark of these trees because the bark of these trees contain a large amount of sugar. So, these bears are eager to eat these trees. While the professor states that te decrease in the population of these treess is not limited to just a place that bears live there. So, the mentioned reason in the passage is not true. These decreas is seen in both the places with birs and without bears.
Third, the text asserts that gradual changes of climate is related to the decline in cedar population. however, the professor rejects this idea by describing that these decrease in the population is seen in regions with high temperatures and also regions with cold temperature. Furthermore, decline in the population is more in warm temperature compared to cold temperature. Eventually, we can say that third reason in the passage is jus nonsense and unconvincing.
